For most of our lives, Ben and I were on the move, working for mining companies all over the world – mostly in Africa. Ben ran operations, and I worked in sustainability and HR, which meant plenty of boardrooms, spreadsheets, and long days.

But the best part of those years wasn’t the work itself – it was the people. We got to spend time with local communities, helping bring clean water, teaching sustainable farming, working with aid agencies to hand out mosquito nets, work on HIV programs, and support families growing food for the first time. Seeing how people could turn a bit of land and a lot of hard work into something life-changing really stuck with us.

After years of living out of suitcases, we both started thinking the same thing: What if we slowed down? What if we built something of our own?

So, we took the leap. We found a property in the Burnett Region, just near Gympie, packed up our city lives, and swapped office chairs for gumboots.

Are we farming experts? Not even close. We’re learning as we go – one muddy paddock and early morning at a time. But the community here has been amazing, full of advice, encouragement, and neighbours willing to lend a hand.

These days, life looks a little different – more dirt under our nails, less jetlag, and a lot more satisfaction at the end of the day. We’re growing, learning, and loving this new chapter, and we can’t wait to share it (and the produce!) with the people around us.

It’s not just us running the show though – we also have a teenage daughter who keeps us broke, two horses, and a poodle who thinks she’s a guard dog.

Vixy, our Quarter Horse, swans around like she owns the joint and should probably be drinking lattes. Footy, the ex-racehorse, is moody as a Monday and thinks he’s still racing for trophies. And then there’s Nala – our black toy poodle – all two kilos of her, patrolling the place like a Doberman… until a leaf blows past and she bolts.

Between the lot of them, there’s never a quiet day on the farm – or any money left in our pockets!
